The two digit place of service codes introduced by Medicare in 1995 have been changed and expanded over the years. Some local inconsistencies were introduced by various Medicare intermediaries and then were eliminated by Medicare. Effective 1/1/03, the Place of Service codes were changed by Medicare again, mostly by adding several new codes. Below you will see the current table of locations displayed by the combobox in each table of Places record, along with the corresponding two digit code at the right. Note that the number at the left of the table is not displayed by pbsw, and you can ignore it (it is a zero based list). This table differs from the original table. If you wish to switch to this table, you should print this page, then go to each record in the Places table in your program, and make sure the description of the Location is correct. Then, go to the PBSW Customize notebook, to the last page (Global Change), and press one of the two buttons on that page (in order to change the Insurance company records to use the new list below rather than the old one).
Some insurance companies still require a one character place of service code, in which case the codes below do not apply. The type of code (two digit, one character) that is printed is determined by a field in the insurance company record. If you want a 2 digit place of service, and you are printing a one character code, or vice versa, then you must edit the Insurance company record and change the place of service style. The last step in the above paragraph does this globally, to all insurance records, or to all insurance records that already are set to use the old TWO Digit place of service.
The place of service code in pbsw2 is derived as follows:
1. Each charge has a Place of Service field, which references one
of the records in the Places table.
2. Each Places table record has a Type of Location field which
defines it as an office, hospital, etc.
3. Each Type of Location has a different two digit code. The
translation table follows; the column headings are the order in
the table, the description, and the code printed on the HCFA form.
